A central theme that emerges from this volume is the acknowledgement of the plurality of ethnic identities that greeted Columbus and a rejection of the way in which subsequent anthropology has blindly accepted colonial ethnological schema.

About the author
Neil L. Whitehead, the editor, studied philosophy, psychology, and social anthropology at Balliol College, Oxford. In 1984 he received a D. Phil. in social anthropology. At present he is associate professor in anthropology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
