About this ebook

Every empire in this book started the same way: with someone brilliant enough to build something enormous, and confident enough in their own story to stop checking whether it was still true.

Too Smart to Stop tells nine real, true stories, from Sam Bankman-Fried's eight-billion-dollar collapse at FTX, to Kodak burying the very camera it invented, to Blockbuster turning down a fifty-million-dollar offer from a small company called Netflix. Some of these people lied. Others simply refused to change fast enough. This book argues those are the same failure, wearing two different costumes.

Built from court records, sworn testimony, and years of journalism, this is a book about how ordinary, reasonable decisions, made under real pressure, quietly compound into the biggest collapses in modern business history: FTX, Theranos, Enron, Bernie Madoff, WeWork, Blockbuster, Kodak, Nokia, and Toys "R" Us.

Real people. Real events. Real consequences.

About the author

I'm Muhammad Mudassir Khan, though most people just call me Mudassir Khan. I'm the Founder and CEO of Outgle, a Karachi-based IT and digital solutions agency serving clients across Pakistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and other markets worldwide.

My career started in search engine optimization, long before I ever thought about running an agency. I learned most of what I know by being in the room when things went right, and more often, by being in the room when things went wrong. Over the years, I've sat across from clients who lost months of work to a bad freelancer, watched a hosting mistake wipe out someone's entire website overnight, and had hard, honest conversations that cost us business in the short term but were the only right thing to do. Those moments shaped how I run Outgle, and they're also what I write about.

I'm the author of two business books. My first, The Fifty Dollar Mistake Every Startup Founder Makes, documents the small, avoidable mistakes that quietly cost startup founders far more than they expect, drawn directly from real client work at Outgle. My second book, Too Smart to Stop: Why Brilliant People and Great Companies Refuse to Change Course, tells nine true stories of well-known business collapses, from FTX and Theranos to Blockbuster and Kodak, examining why intelligent people and successful companies fail to change course even when the warning signs are visible.

My writing comes directly from experience, not theory. I try to document the specific, avoidable mistakes founders and companies make, the kind that don't get talked about until it's too late. I believe founders and business leaders deserve straight answers, not polished pitches, and that's the standard I try to hold myself to, both in business and in what I write.

Outside of Outgle, I spend most of my time in Karachi, Pakistan, where I still work hands-on with clients rather than stepping back and letting the company run itself. If you're looking for more of my work, you can find it under Muhammad Mudassir Khan or Mudassir Khan.
