About this ebook

Leonora Blanche Lang’s The Red Book of Heroes is a collection of twelve historical biographies for young readers that explores courage, conscience, duty, and sacrifice through figures from different countries and periods. Its subjects include Florence Nightingale, Hannibal, Father Damien, Thomas More, General Gordon, and Bernard Palissy, all presented not merely as famous individuals but as people who remained faithful to what they believed was right. The opening account follows Florence Nightingale from her privileged childhood through her struggle against social prejudice and family opposition to her emergence as a reformer who transformed nursing and hospital care. By tracing the earnest convictions and difficult choices of its varied subjects, the book argues that true heroism lies less in glory or victory than in serving others and steadfastly defending honor, compassion, and moral duty.
