About this ebook

Evangelicalism is in trouble. Surveying the modern evangelical landscape, professor Michael Svigel asks, "Why does evangelicalism appear to be spinning out of control, losing appeal to younger generations, dwindling in numbers, or selling out to pop culture to muster a crowd?" He seeks to answer this question by looking to the past—to a Retro Christianity.

Calling for a return to evangelicalism's historical and theological roots, Svigel begins by addressing some of present-day evangelicalism's problems and explores what can be done to help churches regain a healthy perspective on doctrine. He then gives practical examples of what establishing a biblical, historical, and theologically sound foundation will mean for Christians as they think through aspects of church life and worship.

As the numbers of those confused or disenchanted with evangelicalism continue to grow, Svigel's book meets a timely need and will benefit many readers with his balanced argument for preserving the evangelical faith.

I bought this book because it had a cool title, I had never heard of Michael J Svigel at the time. If you read one book this year as a Christian, make it this book. Svigel accurately identifies the problems with Christianity (including non-evangelical/reformed) and step by step rebuilds Christianity using Christ as the theological centre. He strongly advocates using church history to inform our biblical interpretation, but always acknowledging the failings of past church leaders. Instead of either reverting to a past form of Christianity or embracing new age emergent form, Svigel aims to return to the historic faith, believed by all Christians throughout history. Part of this is to acknowledge that there will always be theological and practical disagreements within and between churches, something I found liberating as a believer. But that there are some beliefs that should never change, some that won't be the same, and some that become clearer with time. Ultimately the book is very readable, yet very informative. There is very little waffling on by the author, which is all too common among Christian books. Textbook content in a very readable format.
