About this ebook

Mother is a foundational work of 'Socialist Realism' and one of the most influential political novels of the 20th century. Set in a bleak industrial town in Tsarist Russia, it tells the story of Pelageya Nilovna Vlasova, a woman who has spent her entire life enduring the abuse of her husband and the crushing weight of extreme poverty. After her husband's death, her son Pavel becomes a revolutionary leader, hosting illegal political meetings in their home.

Initially fearful, Pelageya undergoes a profound psychological and political awakening. She moves from maternal concern for her son to a broader, universal 'motherhood' for the entire working class. The novel captures the transition from despair to hope, as Pelageya begins smuggling revolutionary leaflets and participating in the underground movement. Through her eyes, the author depicts the birth of class consciousness and the belief that human dignity is worth the ultimate sacrifice, making it a powerful anthem for socio economic change.

About the author

Maxim Gorky (born Aleksey Maksimovich Peshkov) was a giant of Russian literature and a five-time nominee for the Nobel Prize. His pen name, 'Gorky,' literally translates to 'the Bitter One,' reflecting his perspective on the harsh realities of life for the Russian poor. Orphaned at the age of eleven, Gorky spent his youth wandering across the Russian Empire, working as a dock hand, a baker and a night watchman, experiences that provided the gritty, authentic material for his later masterpieces.

Gorky was a unique bridge between the old Russian literary tradition and the new Soviet era. Though a close friend of Vladimir Lenin and Leo Tolstoy, his relationship with the Bolsheviks was often tumultuous; he was a fierce defender of culture and human rights, frequently intervening to save fellow writers from persecution. In 1934, he helped establish the Union of Soviet Writers and popularised the doctrine of Socialist Realism.
