About this ebook

The Miracle of Saint Anthony reveals Maurice Maeterlinck at once as a symbolist master and a sly satirist, turning from his misty dream-worlds to a sharply observed Flemish town where miracle, greed, and social pretension collide. In the title play, the shabby saint arrives to raise the dead Mademoiselle Hortense, only to meet Virginie's brisk bargaining, funeral practicalities, and anxious thoughts of inheritance, creating a comic clash between the sacred and the mundane. The collection also recalls the haunting force of Maeterlinck's earlier dramas: L'Intruse, where an unseen presence creeps through a sickroom toward death; Les Aveugles, in which the blind, abandoned in a forest, wait in terror for guidance that has already vanished; La Princesse Maleine, a storm-dark tragedy of betrayal and murder; and Les Sept Princesses, with its sleeping maidens and unresolved longing. Across these works, silence, darkness, and helpless waiting become emblems of fate, while Maeterlinck's own life—from law to literature, Parisian recognition, mystical influences, and his partnership with Georgette Leblanc—echoes the restless imagination behind them. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Maurice Maeterlinck was a Belgian poet, playwright, essayist, and philosopher whose work helped define Symbolist literature at the turn of the twentieth century. Born in Ghent in 1862 and trained in law before turning to writing, he emerged as one of Europe's most distinctive literary voices, eventually receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. Across drama, poetry, and reflective prose, he became known for creating atmospheres of mystery, silence, and spiritual tension, often placing ordinary people in situations shaped by fate, waiting, and the unseen forces that govern human life. His writing explores themes of mortality, destiny, love, nature, and the limits of human understanding, and it continues to feel relevant today because it asks timeless questions about how people find meaning in uncertainty. Maeterlinck's influence reaches beyond the stage: his ideas about hidden life in nature and the drama of inward experience helped broaden modern literature's sense of what could be expressed. Readers today still turn to him for his lyrical language, haunting imagination, and his ability to make the invisible feel present. He will especially appeal to those who enjoy philosophical literature, atmospheric drama, and works that linger in the mind long after the final page.
