About the author

Maurice Leblanc (1864-1941) remains one of the most significant authors in French literature, famed for innovation within the detective fiction genre. Born in Rouen, France, Leblanc began his literary career as a journalist before transitioning to writing novels and short stories. He is best known for creating the character of Arsène Lupin, a gentleman thief who became a national symbol for the elegance and wit of French culture, portrayed in 'The Secret Tomb' and numerous other works. Leblanc's sophisticated literary style often contained elements of humor, irony, and social commentary, making his mysteries not only engaging puzzles but also reflections on contemporary society. His creation of Arsène Lupin brought him comparisons to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with Lupin often considered the French counterpart to Sherlock Holmes. Initially, the juxtaposition was made even more direct when Leblanc involved the British detective in his earlier stories, later changing the character's name due to intellectual property concerns. Over the course of his career, Leblanc published more than sixty novels and short stories featuring Lupin. Leblanc's impact on the literary world has endured long after his death; the character of Lupin continues to appear in modern adaptations, including television series and films, whilst the charm and intellect of his narrative style have ensured his works remain popular among readers and scholars alike.
