This is an underrated early novel by the late Martin Cruz Smith which differs so much from his many later novels of international intrigue. The novel is an intriguing, eerie story about vampire bats killing people of the Hopi nation, so in reading this mystical thriller you learn about a bat plague as well as Hopi culture (though some biologists have criticised the portrayal of vampire bat habits here). There is a decent 1979 film of Nightwing that you can watch, though the book is better and much more detailed. It's an amazing written journey for Deputy Youngman Duran and the reader. Enjoy.
