About this ebook

Southern Ohio is a land of deep forests, quiet hollows, and stories that refuse to die. From the shadowed ridgelines of the Appalachian foothills to the winding banks of the Scioto and Ohio Rivers, generations have reported encounters with creatures that defy explanation. Cryptids of Southern Ohio explores these legends with a documentary-style approach—part field guide, part regional folklore, and part atmospheric journey through one of the Midwest’s most mysterious landscapes.

Inside, readers will find detailed entries on the region’s most enduring creatures: river monsters, forest giants, winged apparitions, phantom predators, and the strange beings said to roam forgotten roads after dark. Each chapter blends historical accounts, community memory, and long-standing local lore, offering a grounded look at how these stories formed, why they persist, and what they reveal about the people who tell them.

Whether you’re a researcher, a folklore enthusiast, or someone drawn to the unexplained, this book serves as a comprehensive guide to the monsters and mysteries that have shaped Southern Ohio’s identity for more than a century.

Step into the woods. Follow the river. Listen to the hills.

The stories are waiting.

About the author

Mark H. Roe is a retired Corrections Supervisor turned writer, researcher, and regional folklore historian who uncovers the strange, the forgotten, and the unsettling across Southern Ohio. Based in Chillicothe, he explores river towns, vanished neighborhoods, and historic districts with a storyteller’s eye for atmosphere and a deep respect for the communities that shaped them.

Known for blending verified history with lived folklore, Mark’s work preserves the stories that slip between official records—whispers passed down through families, tales rooted in place, and memories tied to the land itself. His Haunted Southern Ohio series continues this mission, guiding readers through the region’s shadows with clarity, curiosity, and a steady hand.

When he isn’t writing, Mark can often be found walking old streets, studying forgotten maps, or listening to the quiet places where history still breathes. He believes every town has a heartbeat—and some never stop echoing.
