About this ebook

STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) is often positioned as a field of knowledge that holds significance both for individuals’ futures and for societal challenges. Science centres play a role in supporting children’s and students’ development of knowledge within STEM, and this thesis investigates how Swedish science centres, in their encounters with schools, design for learning in STEM.

The thesis adopts a Design for Learning (DFL) perspective and consists of three sub-studies, each with a distinct focus on the design for learning in STEM at science centres. The data material includes observations of students during programming lessons at science centres, interviews with teachers and science centre educators, as well as documents in the form of government grant applications. The analysis is supported by the Learning Design Sequences (LDS) framework and is conducted across three levels. The individual level highlights how the design for learning at science centres can support students’ learning and engagement. The institutional level focuses on the norms surrounding teaching and learning in STEM within both schools and science centres. Finally, the ideological level reveals how the design for learning at science centres is influenced by politics and societal expectations.

Previous research has shown that science centres are often presented as potential learning environments for STEM. This thesis demonstrates that science centres can offer experiences that not only engage students but also position them as co-producers of knowledge. Within science centres, STEM is represented through both single-subject teaching and integrated, cross-disciplinary approaches. The design for learning is shaped by societal demands, while science centres also hold the potential to create learning environments that are accessible to a broader range of learners. The findings also lead to a revision of the LDS framework. The revised model, r-LDS, is adapted to situations where students visit science centres as part of their school day, and where the teaching is led by science centre educators.
