About this ebook

Nazi Goreng is a disturbing story of one young Malay man’s comingofage in the big city and offers a stunning portrait of the racial tensions that pervade Malaysian society. Asrul is a fanatical yet naïve Muslim skinhead from small town Kedah, who finds escape in hardcore punk and aspires to life in the big city. After Asrul is recruited by friend Malik to join a neoNazi skinhead gang, the boys move to Penang to realise their racially fuelled teenage dreams. Petty acts of ethnic violence against immigrant workers and minority groups in the name of Kuasa Melayu (Malay Power) earn Asrul limited social empowerment and occasional ridicule, so it is not without trepidation that he follows Malik again, this time into the seedy world of the Malaysian narcotics trade, where selling drugs offers quick money and street respect. Surrounded by corrupt police officials, shifty Iranians, guntoting Nigerians and a sexy drug mule from mainland China, Asrul soon finds himself drawn into a downward spiral that makes him question his friends, his loved ones and his core beliefs. In this intense and gripping debut, Asiabased punk rock guitarist Marco Ferrarese dishes up a powerful portrayal of displaced urban Malay life.

Fascinating book. Based on real situations, the book follows the fictional story of a young malay who finds himself torn at the thought of his country being diluted by the influx of legal and illegal immigrants from all over Asia. Written with grit and realism, I found myself waiting for the next, often ill advised, scheme that our young protagonist would get drawn into. A great holiday read, definately recommended.

Marco Ferrarese's first novel is a blast. I read through it in a day, devoring each page, dying to know where he would take his characters next. With vivid realism he paints the story of a young malay skinhead, to say more would be to spoil the story.

Twisted ending would be everyone favourite. So I'll leave that part. There are some parts that required the readers to "guess" what actually happening. Good job to the writer 👏

About the author

Marco Ferrarese is a European metal punk guitarist, world commuter and freelance travel writer who, among other remarkable things, toured internationally in Europe and the United States, hitchhiked from Singapore to Milano, taught English in China, hung out with Kurt Cobain’s alleged murderer, sold pizza in Chicago’s Puerto Rican neighborhood and lived in a van for three months as he drove across Australia. He might or might not have a direct lineage with the homonymous Venetian explorer Marco Polo, but what’s certain is that he currently calls Asia home, and he’s resolute in bringing danger back into literature.
