This book examines how pre-service and in-service teachers engage with teaching materials and the different processes implicated in materials development, such as their evaluation, adaptation, design and use. The chapters, written by well-known experts in the field as well as teacher educators, document the role of materials in the overall process of learning to teach English, including how teachers develop teaching materials; how the instruction in teaching materials varies across different international contexts; and how the process of materials development becomes a site of teacher learning and development instead of only a resource production process. Together the chapters document the affordances and challenges of providing materials development instruction in teacher education, as well as how engaging student-teachers in materials development supports the ongoing formation of their teacher identities, pedagogical agency and pedagogical content knowledge.
