Geologists use the African Rift system as a natural laboratory to study the transition from continental breakup to seafloor spreading, by exploring the similarities among the volcanic province of the Saharan zone, the Cameroon volcanic line, Angola and Namibia, and the East African Rift system. The 16 papers are from a symposium at the August 2008 International Geological Congress in Oslo, Norway. Nine of them address volcanism and petrogenetic aspects of various African provinces, while the others consider the characteristics of mantle and crustal xenoliths and the geography of the African lithosphere.
