About this ebook

What does it feel like to love something you know is destroying you — and keep reaching for it anyway?

In this unflinching autobiographical memoir, Jack London traces his lifelong relationship with alcohol — from his first drink as a boy on the San Francisco waterfront to his years as an oyster pirate, sailor, hobo, and gold miner, and finally as one of America's most celebrated authors. Through it all, John Barleycorn — London's name for the spirit of alcohol — is a constant companion: seductive, generous, and ultimately treacherous.

Written with extraordinary candor and literary power, this 1913 memoir deconstructs the romantic mythology of drinking while never pretending the pull isn't real. London does not moralize — he testifies. He describes the allure of the saloon as a place of warmth and male fellowship, the way alcohol unlocked courage and camaraderie, and the slow, insidious way it tightened its grip on his mind and body. Behind the adventure lies a portrait of depression, suicidal ideation, and addiction rendered with a clarity decades ahead of its time.

Essential reading for admirers of Jack London, students of American literature, and anyone who has ever grappled with the gap between knowing better and doing otherwise.
