Liew Y Saelee is a travel photographer and educator who has spent the past decade documenting the intersection of place, light, and everyday life across more than forty countries. His work has appeared in *National Geographic Traveler*, *Condé Nast Traveler*, *AFAR*, and *The Wall Street Journal*, and he has collaborated with tourism boards and brands including Visit Japan, the Singapore Tourism Board, and Moment.
Liew began his career as a photojournalist covering urban development and displacement in Southeast Asia, where he learned that the most powerful images come not from exotic destinations but from patient observation of ordinary moments. His approach to photography is grounded in the belief that access and authenticity matter more than gear—a philosophy that led him to embrace smartphone photography and eventually build a teaching practice around it.
He is the founder of the Mobile Photo Academy, an online platform that has helped more than fifteen thousand students improve their photography through structured courses, live workshops, and personalized portfolio reviews. His students range from complete beginners to professional travel bloggers looking to streamline their workflow.
When not traveling, Liew is based in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he runs seasonal photography retreats focused on street and documentary photography with smartphones. He is currently at work on his second book, which explores night photography and long-exposure techniques for mobile devices.
