About the Author
Kina Rayfor is a design strategist and speculative futurist with over fifteen years of experience at the intersection of technology, narrative, and product innovation. She is the founder of *Rayfor Studio*, a consultancy that helps startups and established companies envision and prototype realistic future technologies for concept pitches, internal R&D, and media productions. Her clients range from automotive OEMs exploring autonomous cabin concepts to media studios developing sci-fi IPs that require grounded tech.
Before founding her studio, Kina spent a decade at IDEO and Frog Design, where she led design research and concept development for Fortune 500 clients. Her work there included the creation of a near-future smart city platform that later influenced municipal planning in Singapore and Stockholm. She holds a Master’s in Human-Computer Interaction from Stanford University and a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from MIT.
Kina is a frequent speaker at conferences such as SXSW, the Future of Storytelling Summit, and the World Design Congress. Her writing has appeared in *Wired*, *MIT Technology Review*, and *Interactions* magazine. She also runs a popular online course, *Designing the Plausible Future*, which has enrolled over 40,000 learners from more than 130 countries.
Through *Future Tech Design*, Kina distills the methods she has refined across hundreds of projects—from AI assistants in speculative fiction to hardware concepts for medical devices—into a repeatable framework for anyone who needs to build technology that feels real. She lives in Berkeley, California, where she is currently working on a documentary series about the unintended consequences of rapid technologization in developing nations.
