About the Author
Kelly A. Leyshon is a speculative fiction author and applied linguist with over two decades of experience designing constructed languages for novels, tabletop roleplaying games, and immersive media. She holds a master's degree in linguistic anthropology from the University of British Columbia, where her research focused on evidentiality systems in endangered languages of the Pacific Northwest—work that directly informs her approach to alien communication design.
Her fiction has appeared in *Clarkesworld*, *Lightspeed*, and *Beneath Ceaseless Skies*, and her constructed languages have been featured in the award-winning *Emberfall* RPG setting and the critically acclaimed *Strange Horizons* serial *The Silence of Distant Stars*. She is the author of the Worldbuilding Craft series, which includes *The Cartographer's Guide to Imaginary Worlds* and *The Anthropologist's Guide to Alien Cultures*.
Kelly writes at the intersection of linguistic theory and storytelling craft, convinced that the most memorable alien species are the ones whose words carry the weight of an entire world behind them. She lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, with her partner, two cats, and a conlang notebook that has grown to approximately forty-seven volumes and shows no signs of stopping.
Her website, kellyaleyshon.com, offers free conlanging worksheets, a quarterly newsletter on language and worldbuilding, and a popular blog series analyzing alien languages from film and television through the lens of real linguistic theory.
