About this ebook

From New York Times bestselling author Kate Quinn comes a gorgeously written fantastical adventure which poses the question: Have you ever wished you could live inside a book? Welcome to the Astral Library, where books are not just objects, but doors to new worlds, new lives, and new futures.

Alexandria “Alix” Watson has learned one lesson from her barren childhood in the foster-care system: unlike people, books will never let you down. Working three dead-end jobs to make ends meet and knowing college is a pipe dream, Alix takes nightly refuge in the high-vaulted reading room at the Boston Public Library, escaping into her favorite fantasy novels and dreaming of far-off lands. Until the day she stumbles through a hidden door and meets the Librarian: the ageless, acerbic guardian of a hidden library where the desperate and the lost escape to new lives...inside their favorite books.

The Librarian takes a dazzled Alix under her wing, but before she can escape into the pages of her new life, a shadowy enemy emerges to threaten everyone the Astral Library has ever helped protect. Aided by a dashing costume-shop owner, Alix and the Librarian flee through the Regency drawing rooms of Jane Austen to the back alleys of Sherlock Holmes and the champagne-soaked parties of The Great Gatsby as danger draws inexorably closer. But who does their enemy really wish to destroy—Alix, the Librarian, or the Library itself?

I was drawn to The Astral Library because of its premise; every reader has imagined escaping into a favorite book. Unfortunately, I wanted to quit reading after the first few chapters. A conflict is the focus of the book instead of the wonderful world of the books. The characters were underdeveloped, & Alix’s repetitive longing for Beau while rhapsodizing on about his looks. The story was rushed & romance unearned. Tailored for a younger audience.

A lot of pop culture references up front - gave me the ick How did someone change the name on her bank account without paperwork but she has to bring documentation? Stop with the victim mentality about your mom, go to therapy. You can't use that as an excuse for your life forever How many times are you going to mention George RR Martin? Take a shot every time Libby Bibb or $36.82 is said. Am I supposed to believe she's the only plus sized girl that's come through looking for refuge? The main character is insufferable. She's mean to everyone. Appreciate that she works several jobs, realistic in that way. Characters seem flat. Are we supposed to believe Alix and Beau have a relationship? There's no chemistry Was this supposed to be a kids book? The people seeking refuge started to sound like the author just wanted to complain about something. What was the point of the astral library being there for refuge if at the end they say people's problems are none of their business?

I love Kate Quinn's books, but this was just meh. The idea sounded amazing, but it just seemed rushed and a bit scattered. It was certainly not a book I could lose myself in, which is weird considering that's kind of the idea of the book. I ended up skimming most of it just to see if I could get into it, but I never did. Something just seemed off about it for some reason.
