About this ebook

"Cortazar's masterpiece ... The first great novel of Spanish America" (The Times Literary Supplement) • Winner of the National Book Award for Translation in 1967, translated by Gregory Rabassa

Horacio Oliveira is an Argentinian writer who lives in Paris with his mistress, La Maga, surrounded by a loose-knit circle of bohemian friends who call themselves "the Club." A child's death and La Maga's disappearance put an end to his life of empty pleasures and intellectual acrobatics, and prompt Oliveira to return to Buenos Aires, where he works by turns as a salesman, a keeper of a circus cat which can truly count, and an attendant in an insane asylum. Hopscotch is the dazzling, freewheeling account of Oliveira's astonishing adventures.

Dizzying and self-satisfied, Hopscotch arrives with instructions and the suspicion you’re not clever enough to use them. Cortázar’s 1963 experiment tracks Horacio Oliveira, an idle Argentine intellectual drifting through Paris in pursuit of La Maga, who lives fully while he theorizes uselessly. Their bohemian circle debates jazz and meaning until a quiet catastrophe exposes their emotional fraudulence. In Buenos Aires, Oliveira reconnects with Traveler and Talita in a circus-asylum limbo that feels less symbolic than inevitable. The novel’s famous hopscotch structure, 155 chapters in variable order, is equal parts innovation and elaborate prank. Oliveira embodies the man who understands everything and does nothing; La Maga, who understands nothing and lives, quietly defeats him. Brilliant, exhausting, intermittently profound. A landmark that sometimes collapses under its own ambition, leaving you impressed, tired, and not entirely convinced it was worth the second pass. ❤️ 🇮🇱
