About this ebook

The First-Time Manager Playbook is a detailed, practical guide to The First-Time Manager Playbook for New Team Leads for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Welcome to Management: What You're Really Signing Up For, The Day-One Role Shift: From Doer to Multiplier, What New Managers Get Wrong: Tales from the Trenches, Delegation: Letting Go Without Losing Control, Feedback That Lands: Praise, Course-Correction, and Hard Talks, Meetings That Matter: Run the Room, Not the Agenda, Build Your Team's Operating System, Managing People Who Used to Be Your Peers, Navigate Organizational Politics Without Playing Dirty, Influence Your Boss and Senior Stakeholders Early, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Julie Jenson is a leadership coach, author, and speaker who has spent more than fifteen years helping new managers lead with confidence instead of guesswork. Her own promotion to team lead arrived, as it so often does, with a title, a spreadsheet of goals, and very little instruction, and the trial-and-error that followed taught her more than any manual—and convinced her that first-time leaders deserve better. She went on to lead teams across technology and professional services, from a fifteen-person software startup to a national operations company, and to build the management training programs those organizations never had.

She has coached hundreds of new team leads through their first ninety days, and her workshops on feedback, delegation, and difficult conversations have been delivered in offices, warehouses, and conference rooms across three countries. Her writing on practical management appears in corporate training curricula and industry newsletters, and her first book, *Stepping Up*, grew out of the questions her coaching clients asked most. Julie is known for plain-language advice that works on a Tuesday afternoon, not just in theory, and for the belief that management is a skill anyone can learn with the right habits. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her family, and she still meets every direct report she has ever had, one-on-one, at least once a year.
