Judy Mathewson is a speech and accent coach with more than twenty years of experience helping non-native speakers communicate with clarity and confidence in English. Trained in linguistics and speech science, she has worked with professionals from more than forty countries — engineers in Silicon Valley, physicians in London teaching hospitals, diplomats in Geneva, and international students on four continents — teaching them not just the sounds of English, but the rhythm and confidence that make those sounds stick.
Early in her career, Judy worked as a voice and dialect coach in theatre and film, training actors to acquire and release accents on demand. That work gave her a unique insight: if an actor could learn to speak like a person from another country in a matter of weeks, so could a businesswoman from São Paulo in her terms and conditions meeting. She founded her own speech training practice in 2008, where she developed the systematic, drill-based method at the heart of this book — a method that treats pronunciation as a physical skill to be trained, rather than a set of rules to be memorized.
Judy has delivered pronunciation workshops for universities, multinational corporations, and government agencies, and her articles on accent reduction and professional communication have appeared in business and education publications. She is known for a warm, direct teaching style and for her honest, practical message: you do not need to erase your accent to be understood, and anyone who can learn to ride a bike can train their mouth to speak clear, confident English.
*English Pronunciation Bootcamp* is her first book. Judy lives in Toronto, where she records her online pronunciation courses, coaches private clients by video from around the world, and still practices her own drills every morning — because, as she likes to say, even the coach keeps training.
