About this ebook

The Screen-Smart Family is a detailed, practical guide to Raising Screen-Smart Kids in a Digital Age for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include The Digital Home Audit, Rethinking Screen Time: The Quality Question, The Ages & Stages Map, The Hands-On Years: Ages Zero to Five, The Foundation Years: Ages Six to Eight, The Tween Turn: Ages Nine to Twelve, Teens in the Wild: Ages Thirteen to Eighteen, The First Phone: A Decision Guide, The Family Media Plan Workshop, Digital Guardrails: Parental Controls That Actually Work, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Joshua Scott is a parenting and technology educator who has spent more than fifteen years helping families raise focused, resilient children in a high-tech world. A former classroom teacher, he began his career in elementary education, where he watched firsthand how the arrival of smartphones and tablets changed—and sometimes upended—the rhythms of childhood. That experience led him out of the classroom and into a decade of family coaching, school workshops, and community education.

Today Scott leads screen-smart parenting workshops in schools, pediatric practices, and community centers across the country, working directly with parents, teachers, and children's health professionals. He is known for a research-grounded, judgment-free approach: rather than preaching strict bans or guilt, he helps families design media plans that fit their own values, schedules, and children's temperaments. His writing on parenting and technology has appeared in national parenting magazines and education journals, and he is a frequently invited guest on podcasts and radio programs exploring family life in the digital age.

Scott's work is shaped by his own life as a parent of three school-aged children, whose screen negotiations—and occasional screen failures—keep his advice refreshingly practical. He holds a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in educational psychology, and he has completed additional training on media and child development through the American Academy of Pediatrics' educational programs.

He lives with his wife and children in the Pacific Northwest, where family policy includes no phones at the dinner table, a device-charging station in the kitchen, and at least one weekly hike that everyone is required to enjoy, whether they like it or not.
