About this ebook

Sleep by Design is a detailed, practical guide to Better Sleep Through Habit Design for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include The Sleep Problem: A Diagnosis, Not a Mystery, Your Sleep Habit Audit, The Habit Loop for Sleep, Your Chronotype and Circadian Clock, Design Your Fixed Wake Time, Build a Wind-Down Routine That Actually Binds, The Bedroom Redesign: Environment as a Habit Trigger, Caffeine, Alcohol, and Food: A Timing Decision Guide, Your Screen Wind-Down: Swapping Digital Cues, The Mistake Audit: Why Sleep Hygiene Advice Fails, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

John Ward is a sleep and habit design coach, writer, and the creator of the Sleep by Design method. For more than a decade he worked in high-pressure product roles, surviving on coffee and heroic late nights, until chronic exhaustion sent him searching for a better answer — and he found one not in another miracle product, but in the science of how habits and environments shape behavior. He spent the following years studying sleep science, circadian biology, and the behavioral research behind habit formation, then built a practice helping exhausted professionals, new parents, and recovering chronic scrollers redesign their evenings one small practice at a time.

His work has been featured in health and lifestyle publications, and his coaching clients include founders, clinicians, and shift workers who had long concluded that good sleep simply wasn't in the cards for them. He writes and speaks on why willpower fails, why environment wins, and how ordinary people can build sleep systems that run on their own.

Above all, John is a believer in the evidence-based truth that sleep is not a luxury or a reward for a hard-working week — it's the foundation everything else is built on. He lives with his family and one very early-rising dog, and he practices every principle in this book nightly, including the days it doesn't go perfectly. He is always glad to hear from readers who have reclaimed their nights, and he can be found online at his website and newsletter, where he shares a short, practical sleep habit each week.
