The story takes place in an unidentified country and period though from language and internal clues this is a generalised 2medieval3 period. It is told by a modern-day father to his daughter and their conversation frames and interrupts the narrative. Much of the story is told in poetry, some rhyming, some in blank verse. It deals with Duke Jocelyn who is very ugly but otherwise very good. For much of the story he is in disguise. He is in love with the extremely beautiful Yolanda. He has a friend Pertinax, who is in love with Benedicta, also disguised as Melissa, and he also disguises himself. The plot deals with their adventures including fights, imprisonment and meeting with an old crone called Mopsa and a dwarf, Lobkyn.
