About this ebook

THE STORY THEY COULDN'T HACK: In this international bestseller, a high-ranking counterintelligence agent describes his life as a former poet laureate to Kim Jong-il and his breathtaking escape to freedom.

As North Korea’s State Poet Laureate, Jang Jin-sung led a charmed life. With food provisions (even as the country suffered through its great famine), a travel pass, access to strictly censored information, and audiences with Kim Jong-il himself, his life in Pyongyang seemed safe and secure. But this privileged existence was about to be shattered. When a strictly forbidden magazine he lent to a friend goes missing, Jang Jin-sung must flee for his life.

Never before has a member of the elite described the inner workings of this totalitarian state and its propaganda machine. An astonishing exposé told through the heart-stopping story of Jang Jin-sung’s escape to South Korea, Dear Leader is an “impossibly dramatic story…one of the best depictions yet of North Korea’s nightmare” (Publishers Weekly).

Best Resource! While my last book I read on NK didn't give me the best descriptions of the landscape and the people within it, this book gave me plenty! I don't want to spoil anything but one of the times I cried is when a mother was attempting to sell her daughter for ten us cents (100 won)! All the emotions of everybody that got involved in that situation was shockingly heartwarming! Why is there so many good kind people suffering in NK? What can we do to help them!? One way is spreading information about it's politics, human rights violations and the kind people who live there. You get all of that here and more including info on China's human trafficking problem! This man is so sweet just like the man in "The Reluctant Communist" but this angel here used his writing talent to get into a comfortable living in NK and boy he has a lot of info and horror stories about that cult! So far the best resource on all aspects of NK. He even saw the "Great Leader" take a poop 🤯.

Incredible book. Unique insight into North Korea and the power the government has over its people. One of the best I've read in a long time.
