James Walker is a leadership development specialist and former engineering director with over fifteen years of experience building and leading teams across startups and enterprise technology companies. He began his career as a software engineer before transitioning into management, an experience that shaped his conviction that leadership skills can and should be learned deliberately rather than left to chance.
Walker has managed teams ranging from three to over fifty people at companies including CloudSimple (acquired by Microsoft), DataDog, and a stealth-stage AI infrastructure startup where he served as Vice President of Engineering. His writing on management and leadership has appeared in *Harvard Business Review*, *First Round Review*, and *Engineering Leadership Journal*. He is the creator of the New Manager Accelerator, a cohort-based program that has helped over two thousand first-time managers build their leadership skills in the critical first ninety days of their roles.
He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife and two children, where he is an active mentor through the Tech Leadership Foundation and a volunteer coach for youth robotics teams. *Leading from Day One* is his first book.
