About this ebook

Terraforming Mars is a detailed, practical guide to Terraforming Mars and the Planetology of a Second Earth for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Why a Second Earth?, A Field Guide to the Red Planet, The Anatomy of a Dead Planet, The Habitability Scorecard, Earth: The Proof of Concept, What Venus and the Moon Teach Us, The Martian Regolith Lab, Igniting the Greenhouse, The Polar Melt Sequence, Bottling the Air: Oxygen at Planetary Scale, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

About the Author

Jacquelin L. Bart is a planetary scientist and science writer who studies cold, dry landscapes as stand-ins for Mars. She earned her doctorate in planetary geology, with field research in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, the Atacama Desert of Chile, and the volcanic highlands of Iceland — environments that mimic Martian conditions closely enough to test instruments, train mission crews, and study how water, ice, and microbes shape planetary surfaces. Her peer-reviewed research has appeared in *Icarus*, the *Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets*, and *Astrobiology*, and she has collaborated with NASA- and ESA-supported research teams on polar and desert exploration campaigns.

As a communicator, her essays and feature stories have appeared in *Astronomy*, *Sky & Telescope*, and *The Planetary Report*, and she has lectured at planetariums, science festivals, and universities on three continents. She is the author of the essay collection *Field Notes from a Cold Desert* (2021), which grew out of her fieldwork diaries, and she volunteers as an educator for outreach programs that bring Antarctic and Martian field science into classrooms. *Terraforming Mars: The Planetology of Building a Second Earth* is her first full-length popular science book. She lives in the American Southwest, where she regards dust storms as a feature of the landscape rather than a problem with it.
