About this ebook

A modern classic by Nobel Laureate J.M. Coetzee—a startling allegory of the war between oppressor and oppressed.

NOW A FILM STARRING MARK RYLANCE, JOHNNY DEPP, AND ROBERT PATTINSON

For decades the Magistrate has been a loyal servant of the Empire, running the affairs of a tiny frontier settlement and ignoring the impending war with the barbarians. When interrogation experts arrive, however, he witnesses the Empire's cruel and unjust treatment of prisoners of war. Jolted into sympathy for their victims, he commits a quixotic act of rebellion that brands him an enemy of the state.

The Magistrate is not simply a man living through a crisis of conscience in an obscure place in remote times; his situation is that of all men living in unbearable complicity with regimes that ignore justice and decency.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. The critique of imperialism and the analysis of torture is excellent. But it is the studied self-hatred of ineffectual liberal elites that really makes the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Yes there is darkness and sadness, but take a second to think about what is going on in our world today. Not just the shooting in the synagogue or any of the other tragedies that have become nothing more than a simple “eye-roll”, being a petulant child is commonplace. Tragic isn’t it? I believe what the reader learns is that history repeats itself over& over. Certain things change, of course, like the clothes etc. but no the history. It never changes. Take this time to think of what we want our history to say about us. Dark, yes. Depressing, again I agree. Learning? ALWAYS.
