About this ebook

An epic novel about the bonds of friendship from the author of Trainspotting.

The story of four boys growing up in the Edinburgh projects, Glue is about the loyalties, the experiences, and the secrets that hold friends together through three decades. The boys become men: Juice Terry, the work-shy fanny-merchant, with corkscrew curls and sticky fingers; Billy the boxer, driven, controlled, playing to his strengths; Carl, the Milky Bar Kid, drifting along to his own soundtrack; and the doomed Gally, exceedingly thin-skinned and vulnerable to catastrophe at every turn. We follow their lives from the seventies into the new century—from punk to techno, from speed to E. Their mutual loyalty is fused in street morality: Back up your mates, don't hit women, and, most important, never snitch—on anyone.

Glue has the Irvine Welsh trademarks—crackling dialogue, scabrous set pieces, and black, black humor—but it is also a grown-up book about growing up; about the way we live our lives, and what happens to us when things become unstuck.

Brilliant, as per usual. Intro of new, and future characters, prior to their respective births, and demonstrating the world before they joined "The Walk Universe", the Schemes, and as is custom within Mr. Welch's novels, a couple of the faces appear(will appear/have appeared) in "future" and upcoming/written novels. Of course, this holds true for appearances of the Original Leith 'Firm' known and loved by hardcore fans, and those who've seen one particular film. Either way, it really feels like you're jumping through time. But never losing the sense of now. The main characters, closest of mates, grow up and experience life together: The blissful and wonderful knowledge of being loved, the heartbreak of losing it, the damage associated with such closeness when terrible events occur, such as when Life shows you how cruel it can be. But, The Glue, the Bond, and love of Best Mates proves to be as real and as solid as imagined. You gotta break a few eggs, and you may forget, but no matter the Situ, this Bond, when summoned, reappears. Darkly beautiful read. And apropos for all who've been th/here before.
