You know MAD. Do you know Humbug? Harvey Kurtzman changed the face of American humor when he created the legendary MAD comic. As editor and chief writer from its inception in 1952, through its transformation into a slick magazine, and until he left MAD in 1956, he influenced an entire generation of cartoonists, comedians, and filmmakers. In 1962, he co-created the long-running Little Annie Fanny with his long-time artistic partner Will Elder forPlayboy, which he continued to produce until his virtual retirement in 1988. Between MAD and Annie Fanny, Kurtzman’s biographical summaries will note that he created and edited three other magazines―Trump, Humbug, and Help!―but, whereas his MAD and Annie Fanny are readily available in reprint form, his major satirical work in the interim period is virtually unknown. Humbug, which had poor distribution, may be the least known, but to those who treasure the rare original copies, it equals or even exceeds MAD in displaying Kurtzman’s creative genius. Humbug was unique in that it was actually published by the artists who created it: Kurtzman and his cohorts from MAD, Will Elder, Jack Davis, and Al Jaffee, were joined by universally acclaimed cartoonist Arnold Roth. With no publisher above them to rein them in, this little band of creators produced some of the most trenchant and engaging satire of American culture ever to appear on American newsstands.

Jack Burton Davis Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 2, 1924. After high school, he joined the Navy, serving in Guam, where he drew a comic called Boondocker for The Navy Times. After leaving the Navy, he enrolled at the University of Georgia, where he drew for the student newspaper. Before long, his teachers were encouraging him to go to New York to pursue his art career. He moved and enrolled in classes at the Art Students League. In 1950, he started selling drawings to EC Comics. Two years later, the company started what became Mad magazine and Davis became one of the illustrators who poked fun at celebrities and politicians for decades. His work appeared on the covers of Time and TV Guide. He also drew movie posters, album covers, and other promotional materials. In 1996, the National Cartoonists Society honored him with a lifetime achievement award and in 2005, he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. He died from complications of a stroke on July 27, 2016 at the age of 91. In addition to his pioneering work on the "serious" EC war comics, Harvey Kurtzman (1924-1993) created the all-time greatest satirical comic (with MAD ), the most widely-read adult comic strip (with "Little Annie Fanny" in Playboy ), and one of the earliest graphic novels (with the 1959 The Jungle Book ). Al Jaffee was born in 1921 in Savannah Georgia. He is an award winning cartoonist and cultural icon. He began his career in 1941 working as comic book artist for several publishers including Timely Comics and Atlas Comics and later at Marvel Comics. He became editor at Timely comics in the late 1940's working on the humor and teen-age comics. He first appeared in Mad Magazine in 1955 shortly after it changed from comic book to magazine. He became known for his work in the satirical Mad Magazine. He started a trademark feature for the magazine - the Mad Fold-In for the back cover - which has appeared in almost every issue since 1964. It is a joke on the triple fold outs in magazines like Playboy. He is Mad's oldest regular contributor after 55 years. His work has appeared in over 440 issues. He is the author of several books including: Mad's Al Jaffee Spews Out More Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions and Tall Tales. (2008) In 2008 he was honored by Reuben Awards as a Cartoonist of the Year. Arnold Roth 's cartoons and illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, Playboy, and Esquire. He lives in New York City.
