The insult got earned, though. A decade of operators bought a CSV, ran it through one template with a bit of synonym shuffling, and flooded search with thin pages. Then Google's Panda in 2011, the Helpful Content Update in August 2022, and the March 2024 spam policies came for them. The trigger in Google's own words is "many pages generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users." Volume was never the crime. That is the whole book. The catalog or glossary you write yourself, where a person who knows the subject actually wrote each entry, is the most defensible asset a small operator can ship. It compounds for years instead of renting traffic until the next update kicks the door in.
If you are weighing a reference site, a glossary, structured catalog content, DefinedTerm and BreadcrumbList schema, or recovery from a thin-content penalty, this is the honest version of programmatic SEO, written for the operator who has to live with the results.
Written from running small businesses in Indonesia, but the diagnostics and frameworks hold the same in any emerging market or one-person shop.
