I have rewritten the same idea three times in one week: once as an X thread, once as a LinkedIn post, once as a Mastodon reply. Three months later somebody quoted a line back at me and I could not find which version they meant, on which site, under which login. The fix is not a better scheduler. The fix is deciding that the copy on my own site is the real one, and every platform is just a loudspeaker pointed at it.
POSSE means Publish on Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere. ActivityPub became a W3C Recommendation on January 23, 2018; Webmention a year earlier. These are not aesthetics. They are the cheap insurance you buy before a platform turns hostile, the way Bluesky went from thirty million users in January 2025 to 1.5 million daily actives by September, down forty percent in six months. When the platform changes its terms tomorrow, you want to already own the original.
I run three small shops and I am not a web purist. This book is the weekend setup I actually use: canonical links back, Webmention to catch replies, a bridge so one post reaches Mastodon and Bluesky, and a slow six-month exit recipe for leaving a platform without losing the readers who pay the bills. If you have searched for POSSE, IndieWeb, webmention, ActivityPub, Bluesky and ATproto, Bridgy Fed, or just owned distribution that outlives the platform, this is the field note version.
Written from running small businesses in Indonesia, but the protocols and the exit math work the same in any small shop or emerging market.
