About this ebook

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale is Herman Melville’s monumental sea novel and one of the defining works of American literature. First published in 1851, the novel follows Ishmael, a wandering sailor who joins the whaling ship Pequod under the command of the mysterious and obsessive Captain Ahab.

As the Pequod sails across the oceans in pursuit of the great white whale, Moby Dick, the voyage becomes more than a hunt. It turns into a vast meditation on fate, obsession, revenge, nature, evil, faith, knowledge, and the limits of human will. Through its powerful symbolism, philosophical depth, maritime detail, and unforgettable characters, Melville’s novel transforms an adventure at sea into one of literature’s most profound explorations of the human condition.

This ebook+ edition is based on the public domain original text and has been prepared for modern digital reading in a clean and accessible format. It preserves the grandeur, intensity, and complexity of Melville’s classic work while making it available to contemporary readers.

About the author

Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet, best known for his masterpiece Moby-Dick; or, The Whale. Born in New York City in 1819, Melville spent part of his youth at sea, working on merchant ships and whaling vessels. These experiences deeply influenced his imagination and provided the maritime knowledge that shaped much of his fiction.

Melville first gained attention with novels such as Typee and Omoo, which drew on his experiences in the South Pacific. His later works became more ambitious, symbolic, and philosophical, especially Moby-Dick, first published in 1851. Although the novel was not fully appreciated during his lifetime, it later came to be recognized as one of the greatest works of American literature.

Melville’s writing explores the sea, human obsession, moral conflict, fate, nature, faith, authority, and the limits of knowledge. He died in 1891, but his work continues to be read, studied, and admired throughout the world.
