About this ebook

The cobblestones gleamed with rain and reflected light as Elena Cartwright hurried through the narrow streets of Old Town. Her leather satchel bounced against her hip with each quickened step, and she pulled her wool coat tighter against the evening chill. The gas lamps cast dancing shadows on the brick walls, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that always made her feel as though she were walking through a dream.

At twenty-three, Elena had grown accustomed to the peculiar nature of her neighborhood. Old Town existed in a strange pocket of the city where time seemed to move differently, where the modern world felt distant and ancient secrets whispered through the alleyways. Something about his posture suggested both strength and melancholy, and she felt an inexplicable pull toward him even as her rational mind urged caution.

The stranger turned as she approached, and Elena's breath caught in her throat. He was perhaps thirty years old, with dark hair that caught the lamplight and eyes that seemed to hold depths of sorrow she couldn't fathom. His clothing was well-tailored but somehow timeless, as though he had stepped from another era entirely.
