About this ebook

An extraordinary, incendiary debut from a rare new talent, Vellum showcases a complex and sophisticated level of writing coupled with a fecund imagination that defies description.

It’s 2017 and angels and demons walk the earth. Once they were human; now they are unkin, transformed by the ancient machine-code language of reality itself. They seek The Book of All Hours, the mythical tome within which the blueprint for all reality is transcribed, which has been lost somewhere in the Vellum—the vast realm of eternity upon which our world is a mere scratch.

The Vellum, where the unkin are gathering for war.

The Vellum, where a fallen angel and a renegade devil are about to settle an age-old feud.

The Vellum, where the past, present, and future will collide with ancient worlds and myths.

And the Vellum will burn. . . .

Their lives is entwined through different ages, stories, realities and some 'reality' called the vellum.

It takes some (dozens of) pages to get used to Hal Duncan's hysteric jumping from a topic to another, switching points of view and even the time in which the story is set. But once the reader manages to overcome the writer's challenge and grasp the generic plot the story unfolds magnificently, with the second half admittedly smoother than the first.

But in a good way. True, it is slow in pace often, and a fair bit confusing at times, but the complexity of how it's all assembled and the subject matter drawn from makes this one of my favorite books. It often feels like reading a transcript of overlapping dream states, some better remembered than others, all begging further and further questions. If you like to wonder, surmise, and then have no real clue what's happening, this is the kind of read one might enjoy.
