Bu e-kitap hakkında
A new translation from Japanese, with a translator’s afterword. The last completed novel of Natsume Sōseki, author of Kokoro and a defining figure in modern Japanese literature. Published in 1915, Grass on the Wayside brings us unusually close to the writer behind some of Japan’s most enduring novels. This is Sōseki’s most openly autobiographical work of fiction, written at the height of his career. He looks back at his life before fame with the full force of his mature art—and little inclination to make himself look better. Coming just after Kokoro, the novel belongs to the remarkable final period of Sōseki’s writing. His gift for exposing the contradictions of the human mind becomes an act of self-examination. The result gives readers of his better-known books a more intimate understanding of their author, while showing newcomers the psychological insight that helped change Japanese fiction. Translated directly from Japanese by Kaede Hozumi. This complete edition includes The Past in the Next Room, a translator’s afterword on Sōseki’s life, the novel’s creation, and its place in literary history, with sources and further reading.
