It's an interesting exploration of what exactly makes up civilization. A curious young woman from a dirty, primitive society where might makes right and everyone is out for #1 encounters a different world where compassion, politeness, and communal activity prevail. She absorbs everything voraciously, relishing her exposure to previously unknown music, teasing, splitting chores, and even religion. This book ends as she is forced to realize that she also needs to give to the common effort. It is not preachy or didactic but I can't imagine subsequent books won't twist into that.
