Sobre aquest llibre
""Gates Of Time"" explores the fascinating world of city gates, those monumental structures that once served as both defensive fortifications and powerful symbols of civic identity. These gates weren't just barriers; they reflected the social, political, and economic realities of their time. Consider the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, a vibrant display of imperial power, or the Tiananmen Gate in Beijing, each telling a unique story about the civilizations that built them.
The book examines the evolution of gate design across different eras, from ancient Mesopotamia to medieval Europe and imperial China, explaining the architectural innovations and engineering feats involved. It also delves into the symbolic dimensions of gates, highlighting their role in shaping cultural identity and projecting authority.
Through archaeological records, historical texts, and architectural drawings, the book progresses from an introduction to the origins of city gates to an analysis of their architecture and symbolic significance, and finally to the challenges of their preservation.
