About this ebook

Award-winning author Garth Nix returns to the Old Kingdom with a thrilling prequel complete with dark magic, royalty, dangerous action, a strong heroine, and flawless world building. This epic fantasy adventure is destined to be a classic and is perfect for fans of Rae Carson, Kristin Cashore, Scott Westerfeld, and Cassandra Clare.

Clariel is the daughter of one of the most notable families in the Old Kingdom, with blood relations to the Abhorsen and, most important, to the King. She dreams of living a simple life but discovers this is hard to achieve when a dangerous Free Magic creature is loose in the city, her parents want to marry her off to a killer, and there is a plot brewing against the old and withdrawn King Orrikan. When Clariel is drawn into the efforts to find and capture the creature, she finds hidden sorcery within herself, yet it is magic that carries great dangers. Can she rise above the temptation of power, escape the unwanted marriage, and save the King?

  • Political Intrigue: Caught between scheming nobles and a withdrawn king, Clariel must navigate a deadly web of city politics she never wanted.
  • An Unwanted Marriage: Her parents see a strategic match; Clariel sees a trap. She’ll do anything to escape being married off for political gain.
  • Forbidden Magic: As a dangerous Free Magic creature terrorizes the city, Clariel finds herself drawn to a power that is both feared and forbidden.
  • A Villain Origin Story: Long before the events of Sabriel, discover the unforgettable story of the woman who would become the necromancer Chlorr of the Mask.

I was so hoping for more in this book. It lacked most of the character and charm of the previous trilogy. I am hoping that all of the world building done in this book is a preamble to another great series in the works.

The story is okay. I'm disappointed we don't get to see the transformation from Clariel to who she'll eventually become. Instead we just get some hints.

I purchased this book immediately when I saw it. I feel like I am a part of this world. From Rabbits to Rogir, from the Ice to the Swamps and all the Districts of Death. When I close my eyes at night, this is the world I return to. Bravo and Thank You Garth Nix. I am, and always will be, waiting for another installment of this Masterpiece.
