Om denne e-bog

Growth of the Soil by Knut Hamsun is a landmark work of classic Norwegian literature and a powerful novel about land, nature, self-reliance, and the changing relationship between humanity and modern society. Originally published in Norwegian as Markens Grøde in 1917, the novel follows Isak, a solitary and hardworking settler who establishes a farm in the Norwegian wilderness.

Through Isak’s life and his family’s experiences, Hamsun explores the dignity of physical labor and the profound connection between people and the land. As the settlement grows and modern technology, commerce, ambition, and social change reach the remote countryside, the characters face tensions between traditional rural life and the forces of modernization.

The novel is rich in descriptions of nature, farming, family, perseverance, material ambition, and human survival. Isak’s patient cultivation of the land becomes a central symbol of growth and endurance, while the lives of those around him reveal both the rewards and costs of progress.

Growth of the Soil is a deeply atmospheric work of literary fiction that celebrates the natural world while questioning the effects of civilization and materialism. It remains one of Hamsun’s most influential novels and was a major work in his receiving the 1920 Nobel Prize in Literature.
