About this ebook

In a future engineered to erase pain, dirt, and violence, a stubborn boy called the Butcher refuses to be civilized. While his polished peers accept safe simulations and careful conditioning, he dreams of real hardship, real conflict, and the old human appetite for danger, insisting that one day he will restore war and become World Director. His rebellion leads him with Hal and Joggy toward the Time Theater, a forbidden place of adult power and hidden history. There, strict rules keep under-fives out, but the Butcher bluffs, sneaks, and pushes past every limit until the boys witness a mysterious Time Bubble showing rain-soaked warriors and a hooded sorcerer. An electronic interpreter explains the strange temporal phenomenon, but the Butcher remains impatient for action. When the ancient scene suddenly breaks through the barrier and warriors surge into the theater, chaos erupts. The Butcher charges in with his levitator and fierce little uninjes, whose savage loyalty helps drive the invaders back. As the spectacle ends, the crowd buzzes with wonder and theories, while the Butcher basks in triumph and the affectionate embrace of his loyal companion, Brute. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Fritz Leiber was an American writer whose wide-ranging imagination helped shape modern fantasy, science fiction, and horror. Born in 1910 into a theatrical family, he first studied acting and worked in the theater before turning more fully to fiction, and that background gave his prose a vivid sense of voice, performance, and atmosphere. Over a long career that spanned much of the twentieth century, he became especially admired for stories that blended wit, psychological insight, urban unease, and a fascination with the strange possibilities hidden inside ordinary life. He wrote with equal skill about magic, technology, fear, friendship, and the fragile boundaries between reality and illusion, and his work often explored loneliness, temptation, survival, and the ways people invent stories to endure hardship. Leiber was a major influence on later generations of speculative writers, in part because he treated genre not as escape but as a flexible way to examine human desire, anxiety, and change. His legacy endures because his fiction feels both inventive and intimate: playful on the surface, but deeply attentive to the pressures of modern life. Readers today will find him especially rewarding if they enjoy intelligent, atmospheric speculative fiction with memorable characters, sharp emotional turns, and a lasting sense that the uncanny is never far from the everyday.
