About the author

Franz Kafka (1883–1924) was a German-speaking Bohemian writer and one of the most influential literary figures of the 20th century. Born in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Kafka studied law at the German University of Prague and worked for an insurance company while writing in his spare time.

Kafka is best known for his distinctive fiction, which explores themes of alienation, anxiety, identity, guilt, bureaucracy, and the individual’s struggle against overwhelming forces. His major works include The Metamorphosis (1915), The Trial (published posthumously in 1925), The Castle (published posthumously in 1926), and numerous short stories and novellas.

Although he received limited recognition during his lifetime, Kafka’s writings became highly influential after his death and gave rise to the term “Kafkaesque,” describing situations marked by confusion, absurdity, and oppressive systems. Today, he is regarded as one of the greatest writers of modern literature, with his works continuing to shape fiction, philosophy, and cultural thought.
