About this ebook

These poems trace a restless imagination moving between medieval song, dream-vision, and modern defiance. From the opening invocations of "Grace before Song" and "La Fraisne," poetry becomes an act of devotion and escape, a way to reach beauty beyond duty, exile, and ordinary life. The speaker repeatedly seeks kindred spirits, whether in the enchanted landscapes of "A Vision of Italy," the courtly longing of a Provençal crusader's love song, or the stylized tributes to troubadours, admired women, and wandering poets like Cino and Audiart. The collection deepens into elegy, wit, and spiritual struggle: Villon's dark bravado, Browning's forceful energy, and meditations on age, memory, and the afterlife of verse all suggest that song survives loss. Elsewhere, love appears as moon, fire, and sun; fame is hunted like the white stag; and city life, war, and poverty are rendered with sharp sympathy. Throughout, the poems blend lyric intensity, irony, myth, and classical resonance, insisting that poetry can still summon beauty, resistance, and lasting power. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Ezra Pound was one of the most influential and controversial figures of modernist literature, born in Idaho in 1885 and educated in the United States before making his name in London and later living in Italy and elsewhere in Europe. A restless innovator, he helped reshape twentieth-century poetry through his bold experiments with rhythm, image, language, and form, and he also played a crucial role as an editor, promoter, and mentor to many major writers of his era. His own writing moved across lyric, satire, translation, and long visionary sequences, always driven by an intense desire to renew poetry by stripping away ornament and sharpening expression. Pound's work is marked by themes of artistic discipline, cultural memory, economic critique, history, and the search for order in a fractured modern world, and those concerns still resonate today in an age that wrestles with information overload, political division, and questions about the value of art. His legacy is complicated by his political views and wartime actions, yet his impact on modern poetry remains undeniable: he helped define what literary modernism could sound like and think like. Readers who enjoy intellectually demanding poetry, experimental style, and writers who changed the course of literature will find him especially compelling.
