Book Description

You haven't changed — but suddenly your body feels like it has its own agenda. The sleep that used to come easily. The patience that used to last all day. The version of you that felt steady, sharp, and at home in her own skin. If you've been told "that's just aging" or "your labs look normal," you already know how lonely and confusing this transition can feel.

Perimenopause, Explained is the guide millions of women have been waiting for. Organized as a true field guide, it walks you through perimenopause symptom by symptom — so whether you're dealing with night sweats at 2 a.m., unexplained anxiety before a big meeting, or periods that have become wildly unpredictable, you can open straight to the answers you need, the moment you need them.

This book doesn't just explain what's happening. It helps you understand why it's happening, how long it typically lasts, what's normal versus what deserves a closer look, and what you can actually do about it — from lifestyle shifts and nutrition to hormone therapy questions and conversations to have with your provider. Every chapter is written to leave you feeling calmer, clearer, and more in control than when you started reading.

Because perimenopause isn't the beginning of the end. It's a transition — and with the right guide, it can be the start of your most informed, empowered decade yet.

About the author

Evelyn Ashford has spent more than fifteen years helping women understand their own health. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Public Health from the University of Edinburgh, one of the oldest medical schools in the English-speaking tradition. Her career began at the bedside, in women's health wards and community clinics. It grew into health writing, patient education, and teaching. Along the way she noticed the same pattern everywhere. Women in their forties arrived confused, dismissed, and hungry for straight answers. This book is her answer.

Her work has earned recognition on both sides of the Atlantic. She received the National Women's Health Education Award for excellence in patient communication. She was named Health Writer of the Year at the British Health Media Awards. Her earlier guides on midlife health have been shortlisted for the Wellness Book Prize and adopted by community health programs and support groups across the UK, Australia, and North America. She speaks regularly at women's health events, where her talks are known for one thing. Plain words, no fear, and answers you can use the same day.

Evelyn writes the way she teaches. Short sentences. Honest numbers. No jargon, no scare tactics, no miracle cures. She believes a woman who understands her own body makes better decisions than one handed a pamphlet and a shrug. That belief runs through every page of this field guide.

She lives in the Scottish Borders, in a stone cottage near the hills she walks most mornings. She shares the house with her husband, two grown daughters who visit often, and a stubborn terrier named Biscuit who supervises every writing session. When she is not writing, she gardens badly, bakes bread well, swims in cold water on purpose, and reads crime novels by the fire. She still keeps a symptom log, out of habit and out of respect for the women who taught her everything in this book.

Connect with her work through her newsletter and speaking page, where she answers reader questions and shares new research in the same plain language you found here.
