About this ebook

I was built to survive the wilderness, not a woman wrapped up in sunshine who can see right through me.

They say silence is safe. That if you don’t let anyone in, you can’t lose anything. I believed that—right up until Joely Windom crashed into my world. She’s loud, relentless, and way too curious for her own good. A city girl with a notebook full of questions and a laugh that echoes through the pines. She’s supposed to be passing through, writing some article that has nothing to do with me. Except now it does.

Now she’s in my cabin. In my space. Under my skin. And every wall I’ve spent years building? She’s tearing down with that damn smile. I’m not used to wanting. But I want her. Bad. She thinks I’m just another closed-off mountain man with too many secrets. She’s not wrong. But the second she looked at me like I was worth unraveling, something cracked wide open.

Now I’ve had a taste—of her laugh, her fire, her mouth on mine—and the silence I used to live in doesn’t feel like safety anymore. It feels like losing her. I don’t chase things. I don’t beg. But for her? I’d burn the whole forest down if that’s what it takes to make her stay.

I was built to survive the wilderness, not a woman wrapped up in sunshine who can see right through me. They say silence is safe. That if you don’t let anyone in, you can’t lose anything. I believed that—right up until Joely Windom crashed into my world. She’s loud, relentless, and way too curiou...

I like that Joely is a writer. I love that she has come to town specifically to put those skills to the test by writing about the vacation rentals. I love that Thatcher thinks he can avoid the fun of Joely like he does with all others. He quickly learns he is not immune from feelings or from the smell of skunk. This is a cute, quick read. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

4.25 stars. This short story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a sweet and steamy, female journalist (Joely)/reclusive mountain man (Thatcher), contemporary small town romance. I enjoyed seeing Thatcher become willing to engage with the world. I enjoyed seeing Joely find a place to be at home and welcome. I enjoyed their intimate moments and chuckled at the bonus scene. I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

This is the first story in the new "Hard Timber Mountain Men" series. "Six names. One blog post. And a town full of flannel, grudges, and emotionally unavailable men who just got called out." Now the men have something to prove. This is a fairly short and quick read about Thatcher and Joely, a grump and a sunshine. This is such a good story with some very entertaining bits, witty banter, cuteness, sweet and stormy bits.
