Evany Johnson is a travel writer, sustainability researcher, and the founder of The Thoughtful Wanderer, an online platform that helps travelers make more responsible choices without sacrificing meaningful experiences. Over the past fifteen years, she has lived in and traveled through more than sixty countries, working with local tourism boards, conservation organizations, and community development projects to understand what ethical travel looks like on the ground rather than in marketing materials.
Her writing has appeared in *AFAR*, *Outside*, *The Guardian*, and *National Geographic Traveler*, where she covers the intersection of travel, culture, and environmental responsibility. She has led workshops on sustainable tourism practices for the Adventure Travel Trade Association, the World Tourism Organization, and the University of British Columbia's School of Community and Regional Planning.
Evany holds a Master's degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Oregon, where her research focused on measuring the social and economic impacts of community-based tourism in Southeast Asia. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked for five years as a program coordinator with the Peace Corps in Guatemala, an experience that fundamentally shaped her understanding of what it means to show up in a community as an outsider.
Her approach to travel writing is grounded in a simple conviction: that the best travel stories aren't about the places you go, but about how you move through them. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her partner and two rescue dogs, and she is currently learning Portuguese for an extended reporting project on sustainable coffee tourism in Brazil. *The Ethical Explorer's Guide* is her first book.
