About this ebook

Breakthrough Problem Solver is a detailed, practical guide to Creative Problem Solving Techniques for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Define the Real Problem, Adopt a Creative Mindset, The Case of the Stuck Team, Brainstorm Your Way to Breakthroughs, The Five Traps That Kill Creativity, Select Your Best Ideas with Confidence, Unlock Creativity with Constraints, Learn from Unlikely Sources, Reverse Engineering the Solution, The SCAMPER Method: A Systematic Creativity Toolkit, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Ethan Cole is a problem-solving consultant and educator who has spent over fifteen years helping organizations tackle complex challenges across technology, healthcare, education, and manufacturing. He is the founder of ClearPath Consulting, a firm that designs and facilitates structured problem-solving programs for Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

Cole began his career as a product engineer at a medical device company, where he led teams developing diagnostic equipment for emergency medicine. It was there that he first encountered the gap between how problems are taught in school and how they actually get solved in the real world. Engineers on his teams were technically brilliant but consistently struggled with ambiguous, ill-structured problems that did not have clear right answers. He began studying creative problem-solving methodologies, cognitive science, and design thinking to understand what distinguished effective problem solvers from ineffective ones. The result was a systematic approach that he has been refining and teaching ever since.

Over the course of his consulting career, Cole has facilitated over four hundred problem-solving sessions with teams ranging from five to fifty participants. His clients have included Google, the Mayo Clinic, the World Bank, Boeing, and the United States Department of Defense. He has trained more than three thousand professionals in creative problem-solving techniques, from entry-level engineers to C-suite executives. His workshops consistently receive top ratings for both practical applicability and engagement.

Cole is a certified facilitator in the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) methodology and holds advanced certifications in TRIZ Level 3, Design Thinking from the Stanford D School, and Six Sigma Black Belt. He serves on the advisory board of the Creative Education Foundation and is a regular speaker at the International Conference on Creative Problem Solving. His writing on problem solving has appeared in Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, and the Journal of Creative Behavior.

He lives in Portland, Oregon, where he spends his non-working hours rock climbing, playing jazz guitar, and attempting to apply first principles thinking to the challenge of growing perfect tomatoes in the Pacific Northwest climate — a problem he describes as "humbling but tractable."
