Community nurse Orla Finch is used to knowing what other people need, but not to asking for anything herself. When an accident brings her to St. Awdry's Apprenticeship Shed, she finds widowed boatbuilder Cal Merrion fighting to keep a struggling training workshop open after the loss of its grant. The heritage trust's condition is brutal: prove the shed is safe, useful, and ready by the Christmas quay inspection, or lose it to developers. Orla's corrective list starts as a threat to Cal's already fragile schedule, but it soon becomes part of the build itself. As the apprentices learn to trust their own hands, Cal must stop carrying every burden alone, and Orla must decide whether care can mean more than control. With winter closing in and Starling still unfinished, saving the shed may depend on whether they can risk building something together.
