About this ebook

On a dusk-lit English lane, a cheerful young traveler falls in with a tall, sharp-witted stranger whose easy talk turns quickly to freedom, wandering, and the loss of open land. Their road to the town of W—— leads not to danger, but to a gypsy encampment alive with campfire smoke, rough humor, and its own fierce codes of loyalty. There the youth meets King Cole, a commanding gypsy chief, and a vivid company that boasts of begging, theft, and outlaw independence even as they sing, feast, and laugh in a world both lawless and strangely ordered. Against this boisterous background, the novel shifts to the inward storms of Flora and Clarence, whose love is threatened by suspicion, class anxiety, and the shadow of uncertain birth. Flora, torn between devotion and obedience, is forced by her mother to renounce Mr. Linden, then suffers renewed anguish when he is wounded in a duel. Clarence, wounded and offended by silence, bristles at the returned letter while Talbot urges a daring attempt to clear his name and restore his place in society. Rich in atmosphere, this is a story of roaming freedom, hidden identity, and love tested by reputation and fate. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Edward Bulwer-Lytton, later Baron Lytton, was a prolific Victorian novelist, playwright, poet, and politician whose long career helped define the popular literary culture of the nineteenth century. Born in 1803 into an ambitious but troubled family, he was educated at Cambridge and began publishing while still young, quickly establishing himself as one of the era's most commercially successful and widely read writers. His career ranged across historical fiction, social novels, gothic tales, and dramatic works, and he also served in Parliament, bringing a public-minded energy to both his politics and his fiction. Bulwer-Lytton excelled at storytelling that combined suspense, sentiment, and moral reflection, and he became known for exploring ambition, social mobility, hidden identity, romance, corruption, and the tension between appearance and reality. Those concerns still feel strikingly modern, especially in a world shaped by class anxiety, reinvention, and the pressure to perform success. Though his style has sometimes been mocked for its grandness, his influence was enormous: he helped popularize the novel as a vehicle for entertainment and social commentary, and his work left a lasting mark on sensation fiction, detective stories, and even modern ideas of the "literary blockbuster." Readers today can find in him a vivid portrait of Victorian life, a keen eye for the costs of ambition, and a writer who understood how powerfully fiction can capture the drama of social change. He will especially appeal to readers who enjoy atmospheric nineteenth-century novels, fast-moving plots, and stories of moral conflict, intrigue, and self-making.
