About this ebook

Returning to London with ambition sharpened and pleasure turned into strategy, the narrator treats dress, conversation, and social display as instruments of power. His comic skirmish with tailors becomes a manifesto on style: clothing must obey natural lines, precision, and self-command, not padded fashion. In Lady Roseville's drawing room, he dazzles with wit and vanity, turning gossip, literature, and fashionable intellect into a game of influence while waiting for destiny to arrive. That destiny seems to take shape in Sir Reginald Glanville, whose sumptuous home and striking presence embody aristocratic ease, theatrical luxury, and restless self-consciousness. Yet beneath his brilliance lies melancholy, isolation, and a fierce warning about the burden of public exposure. As the narrator moves through Park, parties, and political setbacks, he glimpses the emotional undercurrents of London society: ambition, attachment, and hidden pain. The mood darkens in Holborn, where a gin-shop crowd and the theatrical ruin of Mr. Gordon expose the city's hunger and decline. Gordon's shabby grandeur leads to a smoky club of drinkers and political failures, including Chitterling Crabtree, a ruined radical whose life satirizes empty causes, vanity, and self-deception. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Edward Bulwer Lytton, Baron Lytton, was a prolific English novelist, dramatist, poet, and politician whose long career helped shape the tastes of nineteenth-century readers and left a lasting mark on popular fiction. Born into an aristocratic family in 1803, he was educated at Cambridge and entered public life as well as literature, eventually serving in Parliament and later receiving a peerage. Over the course of his career, he wrote with remarkable range and energy, producing historical romances, social novels, Gothic tales, and works of speculative imagination that were widely read in his own time and influential far beyond it. He had a gift for memorable phrasing, dramatic plotting, and vivid atmosphere, and he was especially adept at exploring ambition, class, vanity, moral choice, and the tension between outward success and inner character. These concerns still resonate today in a world preoccupied with status, self-fashioning, and the cost of public performance. Though once dismissed by some critics as merely popular, he is now recognized as a key figure in the development of modern genre fiction and a writer who understood both the pleasures of storytelling and the pressures of social life. Readers who enjoy elegant prose, sharp social observation, and energetic tales of ambition and intrigue will find him especially rewarding.
